Testimonials from partners, jurors and finalists

The French Embassy in South Africa is pleased to support and host the first ever international Blue Ocean Awards, a prestigious innovation competition initiated by INSEAD and HEC. This edition is fully in line with our wish to support the development of South Africa's particularly dynamic innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem. It is also a great opportunity to bring our respective ecosystems closer together.

Aurélien Lechevallier, Ambassador of France to South Africa

HEC Paris has supported the Blue Ocean Awards since their creation in 2014. Every year, we are happy to see our entrepreneurs highlighted for their ability to think outside the box and create new markets. I am thinking in particular of Agorize, Yogist, Advitam, Tarmac Technologies, Bird Office and Sillages Paris. We continue to develop our HEC Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center to support them. In addition, we are delighted that the Blue Ocean Awards are taking on a strong international dimension this year, with the launch of the first edition dedicated to South Africa, which is a logical extension of the school's development on the African continent.

Philippe Oster, Director of International Affairs at HEC Paris

As a leader in the mobility sector, Michelin's ambition is to constantly improve its customers' mobility in a sustainable and innovative way. This partnership is an opportunity for the Group to be closer to French and international companies that innovate in connected mobility services and to reward them. This is in line with the group's open innovation approach and its desire to be a "data-driven company" and a major player in connected mobility.

Lorraine Frega, Director of Business Distribution, Services and Solutions, Strategy, Innovation and Partnerships Member of the Michelin Group Executive Committee, major sponsor

The work on the matrix allowed us to clarify a vast offer and to challenge our offer and our language elements. This step back was very beneficial during the period we are going through! In the middle of a deployment phase during this extraordinary and unpredictable year...! On the day of the jury, one thing is certain, time goes by awfully fast! In fact, I lost my nerve for a moment when I heard the time remaining. But the matrix is so well done and the preliminary guidance for this exercise is very structured, we rely on the tool which allows us to check at a glance that "everything is said" and that nothing is omitted in the presentation. The jury's questions are also challenging and benevolent, as a support to push oneself to go even further and open the field of possibilities.

If I had one piece of advice to give to other candidates, it would be not to hesitate to apply for the second time and to live this experience as a great way to take a step back and project the vision of your project. So much so that you have gained whatever happens: you gain time, clarity, posture... thanks to this approach and the list goes on! The Blue Ocean approach is a great exercise! A powerful tool to lift your head from the handlebars and take your project further.

Pauline Klein, Founder of La Boîte à Indés, finalist

Being a member of the Blue Ocean Awards jury was an excellent way to learn about the principles of the Blue Ocean Awards matrix. We have seen a succession of companies working on very different themes, which has enabled us to understand the challenges of this strategic approach.

Pauline Raud, Communication Manager HUB612, partner and juror

We are proud to associate our real estate school EFAB with the Blue Ocean Awards. For our GES EDUCTIVE group, this will be an opportunity to announce the creation of our own challenge, BLUE CITY by EFAB, a competition which this year will bring together more than 500 students around the theme "re-enchant your city". In practice, this educational project will bring together students from Lyon, Lille, Aix-en-Provence and Paris, as well as some twenty coaches for an exceptional experience of open innovation to be shared with professionals from all areas of the real estate industry. For it is our students who will be accompanying the digital, technological, ecological and social transformation of the sector.

We are also honored to anchor the BOS in Lyon, alongside Michelin, as close as possible to the regions.

Laurence Augoyard, General Manager, Eductive Group

It is with great pleasure that our school EFAB welcomes the 7th edition of the Blue Ocean Awards in its SU Lyon campus. Resolutely open to innovation, EFAB will now integrate a BLUE CITY by EFAB challenge into its programme. BLUE CITY by EFAB is a unique opportunity to bring together professionals, students and coaches to push innovation in a real estate sector in full transformation. Thank you to the organizers of Blue Ocean for their trust and their commitment to our students.

Victor Gervasoni, Director of the SU Lyon campus and Director of the EFAB school

After the great surprise of seeing Gifts for Change selected as a finalist for this 7th edition, I set about preparing for this jury, which includes the Blue Ocean matrix. Having read the Blue Ocean Strategy with great interest, I have long been convinced that our project is a perfect illustration of it, on a red ocean, that of communication through objects, where our committed and philanthropic approach opens up a new and little explored strategic space.

The matrix proved to be a powerful tool and helped to give a more tangible reality to this initial conviction. In particular, the reflection on non-customers and impending non-customers was very enriching.

The presentation to the jury, although by video conference, was an extremely stimulating moment and the jury showed sincere interest in our project. I was struck by the diversity and relevance of the questions asked, but also by the benevolence of its members, who spontaneously offered to help us develop our project. This has already resulted in a meeting with one of the members to explore possible partnerships.

Bravo for this initiative, I am particularly happy to take part in it and thus to make one more step in the understanding of the Blue Ocean.

Alexis Kryceve, Founder & CEO of Gifts for Change, finalist

For a "Baby" project like us, going in front of the jury on the morning of March 26, 2021, was an important event because it is an incredible opportunity to present our vision and our ambition to all those people who are sensitive to the Blue Ocean approach.

The jury's questions helped us identify the vision of our offer. In particular, one point that we will probably come back to, namely the fact of integrating both Parents and Teens in our approach, in response to their anxieties about the future.

The Blue Ocean Matrix is a very powerful tool that allows us to examine points that we have been "feeling" until now. It gives us a framework from which we can derive a strong legitimacy to carry our vision and our ambitions. We finally realize that we are not just proposing an innovation, but creating a new market, which is great!

An advice for the candidates of the next editions: Work as much as possible from the matrix and the proposed order of work, it is a very beneficial guide which allows to force oneself to take point by point the elements of this market creation.

Sylvie Jouanard, President and Founder TeenLabs, finalist

We are happy to have been part of the jury of the Blue Ocean Awards, especially during this first edition in Lyon. We were lucky enough to attend the pitches of some of the region's best nuggets, at different levels of maturity and in various sectors. The grid of reading of the projects through the research of the Blue Ocean brings to the jury a new look on the presented projects while challenging the entrepreneurs, an interesting exercise for all.

Alexandre Vallat, Start-up referent of the French Tech One Lyon St-Etienne, juror

What a contest! Surely one of the most rewarding experiences.2nd participation for Tilkee in the Blue Ocean Awards competition and we come back even stronger and more convincing.

Participating in the Blue Ocean Awards competition was an excellent way to be challenged by a jury of key players in the French economy.

If I had to describe the BOA competition in one sentence? A wonderful energy from both the participants and the members of the jury. This competition has allowed us to go even further!

Tim Saumet, Co-founder & CEO of Tilkee, finalist

The FBA - Femmes Business Angels network is proud to support the BOA7 in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux!
Blue is not just for men. We have identified 20% female teams among the finalists of these BOA7... FBA encourages women to undertake and appropriate the blue oceans and recommends to entrepreneurs more gender diversity in their governance and shareholding. This is a guarantee of better performance!

Cécile Bassot, Vice-President of Femmes Business Angels
